SuDS stands for sustainable drainage systems: the principle that rain should soak away close to where it falls instead of racing off hard surfaces into overloaded drains. For a driveway, it is not an optional extra. It decides whether your new front drive needs planning permission at all, and it decides whether water sits on the surface every time it rains.
The rule that catches people out
Since 2008, covering more than five square metres of front garden with an impermeable surface that drains to the road has required planning permission in England. Lay a permeable surface, or direct the run-off to a lawn or border within the property, and no permission is needed for any size. Government guidance on front-garden surfacing lists resin bound surfacing over a free-draining base among the permeable options, alongside gravel and permeable block paving.
The catch is the phrase "over a free-draining base". Resin bound aggregate is porous, but if it is laid over sealed concrete, the water passes through the resin and then has nowhere to go. That is a permeable surface in name only, and it is the difference between a compliant drive and one that needed a planning application nobody made.
A permeable drive is a system, not a surface
Open-graded stone sub-base with voids for water storage, a porous bound layer on top, and edges that keep the run-off on your side of the boundary. Take any one away and the SuDS claim fails. When you compare quotes, compare the whole build-up.
Ipswich ground: two different drainage jobs
How the water leaves the sub-base depends on what is underneath, and Ipswich has both cases within a couple of miles of each other.
- Sandy east and north-east. Towards Rushmere, Kesgrave and Martlesham the town sits on free-draining Crag sands and glacial gravels. Water in the sub-base simply infiltrates. This is the textbook case and the simplest build.
- Clay south and centre. Much of central and southern Ipswich is over London Clay, where infiltration is slow. Here the sub-base works as temporary storage, releasing water gradually, sometimes with a drainage run to a soakaway, lawn or border. The design changes, the principle does not.
Clay adds one more reason to take drainage seriously: London Clay shrinks and swells with moisture, and concentrated run-off soaking one spot beside a solid-walled house is exactly what you do not want. A drive that spreads water evenly is kinder to foundations than one that dumps it at a downpipe.
Why bother beyond the paperwork
- No standing water. Rain disappears through the surface, so no puddles at the car door and less ice sheet in winter.
- Less load on the drains. Front gardens paved over decades have pushed more storm water into public sewers. A permeable drive takes your frontage back out of that equation.
- No planning application. For most Ipswich frontages, a full permeable build keeps the work within permitted development, saving the fee and the wait.
